I think Pumba had it right in the Lion King. His life’s mantra was Hakuna Matata. It would do us all well if we adopted this problem-free philosopy. Yet, how often we allow our precious lives to be plagued with unnecessary anxiety, worry, stress – and worst of all – negativity. This pessimistic energy seeks us out like a homestader during a land rush. Be careful, if the soil is rich, it will plant its stake and claim its property.
Praise the Lord that we can defend ourselves from such cynical settlers. Methinks Jesus would agree with Pumba’s theme of traquility. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the Prince of Peace didn’t want any of his Children worrying. In fact, He classifies this as a sin – a sign that we are not trusting God. After all, who of us by worrying can add a single hour to our life? On the contrary, there is tons of medical evidence that stressful living can have the opposite effect, putting us on a fast-track to an early grave.
So, what can we learn from Lion King’s winsome warthog? The first thing I take away is that life is full of choices. We have the power to choose. Most fundamentally, we can control our thoughts – our attitude. We need to think positively. We need to have an optimistic disposition. We need to believe in God’s Word, and more importantly, start walking in Its power. When you are confronted by a stressful situation again, begin by asking yourself – will this matter a year from now? If the answer is a resounding “no”, then stop worrying about it! Quit sweating the small stuff and start focusing on the blessings in your life. Glorify God with your thoughts and begin walking in Spirit and Truth. When you do, you will find that life will be so much more abundant.
Yep, I think Pumba definitely had it right. Hakuna Matada – what a wonderful phrase!
