If you are reading this blog and are part of the One Life family, you were likely drawn to us because of our culture. That culture is built on the core values of Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Teamwork.
Three of these values are individually focused – your Integrity to do the right things for the right reason, the Service you provide your clients, and the Excellence in which you conduct your business activities.
Today, I want us to see beyond ourselves and to focus on Teamwork. I understand that sales is largely and “individual sport” but it still takes teamwork to make great things happen.
“If you want to go fast…go alone. If you want to go far…go together.”
In every great environment, I have ever been involved in, there was great Teamwork. Teamwork is a compound word built on Team…and Work. When we want to do more, to do something truly great, we must work as part of a team.
Bringing people together (Team) and people doing what they do best (Work) does not automatically bind them together. Bruce Tuckman is famous for the four stages that governs what happens when people are first brought together to build a team –
Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing
Tuckman asserts, “You can’t expect a new team to perform well when it first comes together. Forming a team takes time, and members often go through recognizable stages as they change from being a collection of strangers to a united group with common goals”.
What brings people together and more importantly, holds them together is a unified vision…Univision.
I recall the story of the tower of Babel in Genesis chapter 11. People had come together (Team) and each person was skilled in some area of building (Work). They had the unified vision of building a tower that would extend into heaven so they could go see God.
“But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The LORD said, Behold, they are one people and they have one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.”
Never mind that God wasn’t happy with what they were building – it is the principle of unified vision that got my attention. As a Team, when we Work with a common goal, a unified vision, nothing we imagine will be impossible for us.
There are three” teams” I want you to do a Univision “gut check” with:
Yourself – Are you unified with you? Seems like a strange question to ask but the single most destructive person to your achievement is not someone else, or your circumstances – it is yourself. Tony Robbins says self-sabotage kills more dreams than any other cause. Are you of two minds…two visions? Does one part of your mind say, “I can” while the other says “I can’t”. The book of James (1:8) says a double-minded person is unstable and will have a hard time receiving or achieving anything.
· Your Spouse – If you are married, it is vital that you have a unified vision with your spouse. Challenges at home are usually tied to a divided vision…division. Sure, your spouse has their own needs (men need honor and women need security) but in a God ordained union, these are designed to be complementary. When the two of you get in agreement, there is a power that rivals what God describes in the verse we reviewed in Genesis;
“Again, I say to you, that if two believers on earth agree (that is, are of one mind, in harmony) about anything that they ask (within the will of God), it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.”
Put more colloquially,
“It takes two to make a thing go right, it takes two to make it outta sight!”
· Your partners – The people that you are connected with in business should represent more than just a contract. When I talk to potential partners, I tell them that before we get financially aligned, we need to be philosophically aligned. To do that, we must build consensus. We must determine what each person wants from, and brings to, the relationship. Fully developed, that consensus turns into a unified vision that allows us to achieve greatness.
Do you want to take life to the next level? Get unified.
Do you want to achieve greatness? Get unified.
Do you want to accomplish what today looks like the impossible? Get unified.
What will drive that level of achievement is you and me coming together in one accord. That means:
- Sharing our best ideas and adding our solutions to the cooperative so that we can overcome the inevitable challenges.
- Voicing our opinions, not in a BCD (Blame – Complain – Demand) fashion, but one that takes the kaleidoscope of diverse experiences and unique perspectives and builds a consensus that we can all rally behind.
- Presenting our gifts to the team – doing the work we are called to do for the greater good of the team. You will take proportionately from the harvest of our collective efforts and regardless of what your role is…you are a valuable and needed asset.
When I look at the combined forces of One Life and Heartland Financial Group, I am in awe of the talent these two entities possess. Brilliant people, who work hard and desire to serve with integrity and excellence. As we come together to disrupt our industry and to do what has never been done before (the impossible), I am reminded that the only way to see that to fruition is not solely based on talent, brilliance, resources or even hard work…it is predicated on using God’s “doing the impossible” principle of
